Taka Ramen + Sushi.
NDY Contracting partnered with AKA Architects and designer Josianne Bérubé to transform a mid-century bank building into Taka Ramen + Sushi, a minimalist yet bold Japanese restaurant in the heart of Squamish. This project, featured in Western Living, is a testament to overcoming construction challenges and delivering exceptional craftsmanship.
One of the most notable obstacles was the removal of the original concrete vault, requiring hazardous material handling and complex foundation reinforcement. Once the vault was cleared, the space was reimagined, incorporating a back-of-house kitchen and a sleek, functional dining area designed to reflect modern Japanese aesthetics.
Inside, the design focuses on beech millwork, wood-slat ceilings, and pendant lighting from Studio Botté, enhancing the aesthetic while maintaining functionality. The sushi bar serves as the heart of the restaurant, providing an open, immersive dining experience where chefs showcase their craft. Privacy window films with artistic cutouts add playful natural light at specific times of day, creating a dynamic dining atmosphere. The project scope extended beyond the interiors, with exterior decks and a garbage enclosure built to meet enhanced AHJ wildlife standards—a critical requirement for businesses operating in Squamish.
NDY Contracting provided general contracting, construction management, and project management services, ensuring a seamless build from demolition to final fit-out. Completed in early 2021, Taka Ramen + Sushi now serves as a popular dining destination in Squamish, blending bold Japanese influences with contemporary West Coast design.
